Hurricanes Rally by Eagles in Last At Bat
ADAMS, Mass — Two games into the season, and the Hoosac Valley baseball has won a pair of games in two completely different ways. The one constant between the two contests has been the play of senior Zach Brassard.Two days after mercy ruling rival Drury 16-1, the Hurricanes squeaked out a back-and-forth contest with Mount Everett by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 7-6 win. The lead had gone back and forth three different times late in the game, when the Eagles seemed poised for victory with a one-run lead and two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
Hoosac senior Corey Meczywor drew a walk, however, and Brassard tied the game with a double after a long, 13-pitch at bat. Senior catcher Connor Tworig then doubled in Brassard for the winning run, helping the Hurricanes improve to 2-0 this year. Both Brassard and Tworig finished with three RBI in the game, while classmate Tanner Bird came through with one RBI and a run scored.
"The game went back and forth several times, but we made a great comeback in the bottom of the seventh," Hoosac head coach Bob Rivard said.
Brassard is off to a sparkling start this year, going 6 for 6 with eight RBI and five runs scored in the first two games combined. He also pitched the first four innings of Friday's contest, throwing three scoreless frames until Everett (2-4) broke out with four runs in the top of the fourth. Brassard struck out five and walked two before giving way to to Bird, who allowed two unearned runs in his two innings of work. After the 'Canes retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles stormed right back with two runs of their own in the sixth.
Hoosac sophomore Matt Braman struck out a pair of batters on his way to pitching a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the win. Everett's Colby Rueger recorded the first two outs of the seventh before being charged with the loss.
The Hurricanes return to action with night game against Lenox at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
