Gutmann's Strong Day Lifts Hornets over Saints

WESTFIELD, Mass — The McCann Tech baseball team evened up its record on Friday, scoring nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings combined to blow by Saint Mary's for a 13-5 win.

Freshman Sean Davis and senior Mike Chappell combined to give the Hornets (2-2) a solid effort on the mound. Davis made his first career start, allowing two earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings of work. After scoring three times in the top of the first inning, McCann found itself tied with the Saints at 4-4 heading into the top of the fifth. Pat Ryan's club scored three times in that frame before plating six more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Chappell came on in the bottom of the fifth and shut St. Mary's down from there, allowing just one hit and one earned run over the final three innings. He struck out five batters and walked two to improve his record to 1-1 this year.

"This was a good win for us," Ryan said. "Sean and Mike pitched a very consistent game and threw strikes. Mike really shut the door when he came on in the fifth, and Nate Gutmann had a hot bat, going 3 for 5 and finishing just shy of hitting for the cycle."

Gutmann finished with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored, raising his season average to .500 in the process. Junior John LeClair added two runs batted in, while classmate Chad Raimer finished with two runs scored and one RBI.

The Hornets next host Smith Academy at 1 p.m. on Monday.
