HATFIELD, Mass. — The McCann Tech baseball team needs to keep winning games to have a chance at playing in the Western Mass. tournament. The Hornets went on the road Friday and kept that dream alive by beating Smith Academy, 9-5.

McCann (6-7) came out swinging the bats, scoring three runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. Sophomore Dillion Carr went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored, while junior TJ Therrien batted 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Sophomore Justine Racine and freshman Sean Davis also had good days at the plate, driving in two runs apiece.

"It was a nice, big win for us today," Hornets head coach Pat Ryan said. “We need to win four out of our last six games. If we play like we can, we should have no problems doing just that. I have a lot of confidence in our team to do all the right things."

Therrien started the game and pitched three innings, giving up two runs and striking out four. Senior Mike Chappell (2-3) pitched the final four frames, allowing two earned runs and striking out five to earn his second victory of the week.

The Hornets had 10 hits and walked four times against two Falcons' pitchers. David Longstreeth took the loss in relief, allowing six runs in just under four innings of work. Steven Golonka and Cameron Woodward paced the Smith offense by collecting three hits apiece.

McCann next hosts Franklin Tech at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
