SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The McCann Tech baseball team knows it has some work to do if it wants to make it to the Western Mass. Tournament. On Wednesday afternoon, the Hornets continued that work by earning a 17-2 win over Pioneer Valley Christian in a game shortened to just six innings due to the mercy rule.
After falling behind 2-1 after the first inning, McCann (7-8) really got the offense going with three runs in the second. But it was the huge nine-run fourth inning that put the game away. Sophomore Justin Racine, senior Mike Chappell and juniors TJ Therrien and Chad Raimer combined for 12 hits, eight RBIs and five runs scored, while freshman Sean Davis also did some damage against the Eagles' pitching staff, hitting an inside-the-park home run in the second inning and finishing with two RBIs and three runs scored.
“This was a good win," Hornets head coach Pat Ryan said. "We played the game and had fun doing it. We need to win three of the next five games to make the tournament."
Chappell picked up the win on the mound to even up his record to 3-3 on the year. He pitched four innings, giving up two runs while striking out seven. Junior Kyle Crosier finished the game, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out two.
McCann next plays at Smith Vocational at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
