Mounties' Cunningham Shuts Down Wildcats

Staff Reports

10:43PM / Thursday, April 26, 2012

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — With Avery Cunningham dealing on the mound, the Mount Greylock baseball team didn't need a whole lot of offense to earn a victory against Lee on Monday. The Mounties' offense didn't mind helping out, though, pounding out 18 hits, including four doubles, to give Greylock a 12-1 home win over the Wildcats.

Cunningham was on top of his game, scattering just three hits over six scoreless innings to improve his season record to 2-1. The senior starter struck out one batter and walked three before turning the ball over to sophomore Robbie Buffis, who allowed one unearned run in the seventh inning to close out the game.

The Mounties' pitching staff fared much better than Lee starter Ryan Nalepa, who allowed nine earned runs in the first four innings to take the loss. Greylock (4-2) opened things up by combining for five runs in the first two frames before breaking the game open with a four-run burst in the bottom of the fourth. Nine different players collected hits for the hosts, led by senior Josh Fortier and junior Eric Leitch. Fortier went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Leitch also batted 3-for-4 with one RBI, three runs-scored and two stolen bases.

Nick Zimmerman, Billy Pulasky and Andrew Leitch also drove in two runs apiece for the Mounties, who next host New Lebanon at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
