Mounties Rebound with Win over Rutland

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass — The Mount Greylock baseball team didn't get off to a good start in its first game of the season on Thursday. The Mounties second attempt turned out much different, however, thanks mainly to an excellent start by junior pitcher Andrew Leitch

The Greylock hurler held visiting Rutland off the scoreboard for six straight innings on Saturday, setting the tone in the Mounties' 8-3 win at home. Leitch limited the Raiders to just six hits and three walks, striking out five to earn the win and help Greylock (1-1) rebound from a 12-2 loss to Mount Anthony earlier in the week. Mixing an effective curveball with a fastball that changed speeds throughout the game, Leitch kept the opposition scoreless until Rutland broke through for three unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Sophomore Robby Buffis came on in relief, though, and struck out the final two batters to close out the game.

The Mounties' offense got going early, earning a 2-0 lead by the end of the first inning. Senior captain Billy Pulasky then came through with a two-run homer in the next frame, sparking a four-run second inning that gave the hosts a 6-0 lead. Pulasky finished 2 for 4 with a double and home run, while Mike Munzer and Eric Leitch each came through with RBI doubles.

Greylock next plays at Wahconah at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
