11:20PM / Monday, May 14, 2012
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — Mount Greylock head baseball coach Steve Messina couldn't have asked for more in his team's 11-0 home win over New Lebanon on Friday.
Messina got some much-needed rest for his pitching staff and sent 17 different batters to the plate against the Tigers, who only managed two hits all game against a trio of Mounties' hurlers. Starter Robby Buffis didn't allow a hit in the first three innings, picking up his first win of the season after he sat down with five strikeouts and zero walks.
Junior Frank Rickus then followed, striking out one batter without allowing a hit in two innings of work. Freshman Ian Brink then closed out the game, fanning four bats while giving up two hits over the final two frames. The Greylock offense, meanwhile, chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the first inning before adding a single run in the second. The Mounties (9-4) then put the game out of reach with a six-run third inning, giving Rickus and Brink a 9-0 lead to work with.
Rickus also had a fine day at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Junior Eric Leitch was his typical productive self, batting 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI triple and two runs scored. Sophomore Nick DiSanti also contributed two hits and one RBI, while junior Andrew Leitch finished with two runs batted in.
Greylock will try to clinch a spot in the Western Mass. tournament in its next game, a home contest against Drury at 4 p.m. on Monday.
