MONSON, Mass. -- Mount Greylock senior Michael McCormack totaled four goals and five assists Tuesday afternoon in the Mounties' 24-2 victory on the road over Monson High School.

It was McCormack's fourth goal, with 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter, that tied the All-State career points record held by Duxbury's Max Quinzani with 577 points.

McCormack came into Tuesday afternoon's game needing nine points to tie the record and 10 to break it; after scoring his fourth goal at the end of the second quarter giving the Mounties a 21-2 lead, the senior mid-fielder sat out the remainder of the game.

It took McCormack a few attempts to get that typing point towards the end of the second quarter; he let off a few shots, he fed a few balls to his teammates who had missed shots, but in those final 30 seconds he was able to let one go that found the back of the net.

"Of course that's the case, as soon as we become aware of a record we're trying to catch things fall apart on offense," Mount Greylock coach Brandon Asplundh said. "But we stuck with it and we got him that point, which was a nice moment for him."

After McCormack got his ninth point he came off the field in exhaustion, being greeted with high-fives from teammates and the game ball from his coach.

"A big shout out to all my teammates who helped me get here," McCormack said. "A lot of the points have been assists, so thank you to all my teammates.

"It definitely feels good, but we still have a lot of work to do."

Monson was playing a box and one on McCormack from the start, forcing the Mounties to feed other players; Liam Chenail scored four of their first quarter goals and added another in the second quarter.

"We were playing good lacrosse and they were having a hard time covering us because they were paying so much attention to him," Asplundh said. "He was letting everyone else do it, we have a lot of capable players on offense and he was letting them do a great job."

McCormack will have a chance to break the record Thursday evening against Westfield at Mount Greylock for their senior night; all he needs is one more point.

"I'm going to try to not think about it too much," he said. "I'm more focused on getting the win than just the point, we have to try and prepare as best we can for Westfield."
