Pope Francis Boys Pull Away from Mount Greylock in Third Quarter

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- The Pope Francis boys lacrosse team Friday went on a 5-0 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters en route to an 11-7 win over Mount Greylock.

 

Robert Hollander scored seven goals, including four in a row in the third quarter after the Mounties (1-1) had taken a 4-3 lead with the first goal of the second half.

 

Nick Belouin had a hat trick for Mount Greylock, which was playing short-handed in its second home game to start the season.

 

“I’m real proud of our underclassmen,” Mount Greylock coach Jeff Stripp said. “We had a lot of guys who had to step into roles. We had an eighth-grader and a lot of freshmen out there. We’re missing a bunch of guys for a variety of reasons.

 

“Guys grew up tonight. We’re buying into the process because we do have young players who are contributing. Tonight, we got better. I didn’t like the outcome, but tonight we got better.”

 

Freshman Mac Waynick scored a goal and classmate Ben Prescott had two assists in the loss.

 

Prescott set up Belouin for a goal in the first minute of the third quarter to give Mount Greylock a 4-3 lead.

 

But less than a minute later, Hollander answered for the Cardinals (2-3).

 

It stayed a tie game until midway through the third when Hollander bounced a shot past Mounties goalie David Falk (eight saves).

 

Hollander finished the quarter with a pair of goals in the last two minutes to give the visitors a three-goal margin.

 

It was 8-4 early in the fourth before Belouin scored with an assist from Michael Wellspeak (two goals, two assists) to end the 5-0 run.

 

The Mounties twice cut the deficit to two goals in the fourth quarter, but Pope Francis scored the last two goals of the game in the final three minutes.

 

Mount Greylock goes to Lee on Monday.
