McCann Tech Boys Down Central on Senior Day

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- With just four seniors graduating from this year’s boys lacrosse team, the future looks pretty bright for the McCann Tech Hornets.

The present looks pretty darn good, too.

Darian Tovani scored five goals Tuesday to lead McCann Tech to a 12-5 win over Springfield Central as the Hornets improved to 9-5 this spring.

With the team’s first ever Central/Western Mass tournament berth secured and a place in next week’s State Vocational tournament on the horizon, things are definitely looking up for the third-year program.

“They’ve jelled more as a team,” McCann Tech coach Paul Lange said. “Everyone is working together. Everyone is focused. Everyone is working hard. All that stuff has made a huge difference this year.”

Lange pointed to his captains and that small but influential senior class for helping the team make a big leap from last year’s five-win season.

“The seniors have been huge this year,” Lange said. “Big contributions from David Rancourt as a captain and on the field scoring. Today he had two goals. Big contributions from Devon Griswold, a first-year player who has scored a bunch of goals this year. Today, he almost scored one with his left hand, his off hand.

“Matt Dellaghelfa is a kid who has played lacrosse before, just not with us, and he’s put in some numbers for us. … And Javen Reinhardt, this is his second year with us, and he’s come such a long way.”

Tuesday was Senior Day for the Hornets, who have at least one more home game on their schedule -- a rescheduled game against Belchertown on Tuesday.

Darius Tovani scored twice, and Jason Delisle, Evan Knapp and Zavier Martin-Levesque each scored a goal as the Hornets completed a two-gam season sweep against Central.

It was 9-4 at half-time, but Keegan Dellaghelfa (four saves) and the Hornets’ defense allowed just one goal after half-time.
