NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Megan Goyette struck out eight, and the McCann Tech softball team scored five runs in the sixth inning to earn an 8-1 win over Putnam on Thursday in the first round of the Western Massachusetts Division 3 tournament.

“So proud of this team,” McCann Tech coach Robin Finnegan said. “It took us a few innings but the bats woke up and we put the ball in play. Good things usually happen when you put the ball in play.

“We played solid defense and Meg Goyette kept Putnam off balance by striking out nine and scattering four hits.”

Kalley Vanuni went 2-for-4, and Hailey Williams and Mya Daigneault each drove in a run for the eighth-seeded Hornets (14-7), who made the most of five Putnam errors.

“In the sixth Ayrian Quinones laid down a sac bunt,” Finnegan said. “Freshman pinch hitter Hailey Miller had a key RBI single.”

McCann Tech moves on to Sunday evening’s quarter-final at top-seeded Turners Falls (18-2).
