LEE, Mass. — Sophomore Heather Tomkowicz gave up two runs, one earned, in the first inning and then blanked Lee the rest of the way as the Mount Greylock softball team earned a 7-2 win on the road on Wednesday. Tomkowicz would pitch seven strong innings, striking out 10 while walking only one to improve her record to 10-4 this season.

After allowing the two runs in the bottom of the first, the Mounties (10-4) responded with two runs in the top of the second. Tomkowicz and classmate Meredith Dezieck each doubled in the fourth to help put Greylock ahead for good and clinch a spot for the Mounties in the upcoming Division 2 Western Mass. tournament.

"We were able to string some solid hits together in the fourth inning to put us ahead in this one," Greylock head coach June Blake said. "We carried that offense into the fifth, when Sierra Holland led the inning off with a double. We finished the game with five doubles."

The Mounties were able to put three insurance runs in the fifth. After Holland led off the fifth with a double, senior Caitie Benoit walked before freshman Miranda Voller and junior Anna Penna each came through with RBI singles. Greylock outhit the Wildcats 13-3 on the day and only committed one error defensively.

Sophomore Kendal Frye had a big day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs batted in for the Mounties. Benoit reached base all four times she came to bat, hitting 3-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored, while Voller helped out by collecting a pair of hits and scoring three runs.

Ashley Somerville went the distance for Lee, allowing five earned runs and two walks to take the loss. Greylock next hosts Lenox at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
