WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Mount Greylock girls softball team jumped out to an early lead and withstood two furious challenges to beat Hopkins Academy, 12-7, in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Mounties scored four in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead before Hopkins was able to post any crooked numbers with a four-spot in the fifth. Greylock then padded its lead with three in the fifth and two in the sixth, which was enough to take the game despite Hopkins posting three runs in the top of the seventh off a home run by Allison Markowski.

For the Mounties, Lily Lesieur pitched four scoreless innings to start the game, notching three strikeouts and giving up only three hits, and was able to get out of a wild top of the fourth that saw Hopkins load the bases with no one out only to strand all three runners.

Hopkins made it interesting in the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits, went one-two-three in the fifth and scored the three runs in the sixth before the Mounties were able to get the final three outs to end the game.

Several Mounties contributed to the team's 13 hits, led by Alyssa Phelps with five hits and junior varsity starting pitcher Kami Sweet, an eighth-grader who suited up Sunday for varsity and notched three hits, reached base four times and scored three times.

The Mounties now face top-seeded and five-time defending Western Mass champion Turners Falls on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at UMass in the sectional semi-finals.
