PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Drury softball team got an effective pitching performance from starter Cat Record and the defense played error-free baseball in a 9-3 win over St. Joe's on Wednesday. The Blue Devils are now 5-2 on the season, with all five of their wins coming on the road.

Mary Ann Maroni's team jumped on the Crusaders early, scoring three times in the top of the first inning and two more times in the third to open a 5-0 lead. Senior Kait Moresi, who led Drury by going 3 for 4 with RBI at the plate, singled to start the inning. Freshman Jessica Sunn then reached on an error before senior Kendra Hinkell roped a two-run double to left field. Hinkell then scored on an RBI by senior Ashley Mirante

St. Joe's cut the lead to 5-2 with two runs in the the bottom of the third inning, but the Blue Devils came right back with four more runs in the top of the fifth. While the Drury defense played cleanly all game, the Crusaders hurt themselves with six errors on the day.

"This was a total team effort," Maroni said. "Cat scattered eight hits over seven innings, while both the infield and outfield played solid defense behind her."

Record improved her season mark to 4-1 by allowing three earned runs, striking out three batters and walking three more. Chanler Hospot took the loss for St. Joe's, giving up six hits with two strikeouts and three walks over five and two-thirds innings of work.

The Blue Devils will try to maintain their perfect record on the road on Friday when they play at Mount Everett at 4:30 p.m.
