WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Mount Greylock’s Jordyn Codding went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, and Lily Lesieur allowed just three hits Tuesday in a 14-2, six-inning win over McCann Tech.

Alyssa Phelps and Sam Trybus each went 3-for-4 in a 14-hit Mount Greylock attack as the Mounties dealt the Hornets their first loss of the season.

Lesieur was dealing throughout, striking out seven and registering four 1-2-3 innings on a day with near-constant drizzling rain.

“It’s tough,” Mount Greylock coach June Blake said of the conditions for pitchers. “The wet ball is tough to grip. It’s tough to throw certain pitches in that weather. But I thought she did a great job of staying on top of batters, keeping them off balance. And what they did put in play, we were able to make good plays.”

The Mounties played error-free defense behind Lesieur, who had just a couple of hiccups.

In the second, she put runners on second and third with two out but then got the next batter looking at a third strike at the end of a 12-pitch at-bat.

In the fourth, the Hornets (7-1) broke through for a pair of runs.

Chasity Little led off with a single to left and moved up on a passed ball before Hanna Williams delivered a two-out RBI double to right-center. Williams later scored on Mya Daigneault’s RBI single.

But those two runs only put a dent in the 8-0 lead Mount Greylock established over the first three innings.

The big damage came in the third, when Codding hit a two-run double, and eighth-grader Brodi Rosier drove in a run with her third hit in her first three at-bats.

All of Mount Greylock’s offense came without McCann Tech ace Megan Goyette in the circle.

Goyette, who has a 1.47 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 43 innings, was rested along with most of the McCann regulars.

“Unfortunately … decisions were made to change our schedule around, and we have Hopkins tomorrow, and that game is more important to us,” McCann Tech coach Robin Finnegan said of her decision to sit several starters in the sloppy conditions. “And I’m not going to risk the safety of my athletes to [play in] a game that’s not as important as the Hopkins game.

“If we didn’t have the Hopkins game tomorrow, I would have went with our regular starters, and we would have played a more competitive game.”

The bonus for McCann was a chance to give its reserves significant time against a quality opponent.

“This also gave me an opportunity to see what I have coming up,” Finnegan said. “And some of the kids made some nice plays.”

Sophomore Sarah Fortini made the biggest play of the day, a highlight-reel diving catch in center field to help keep the Mounties off the board in the fourth.

But Mount Greylock was able to add two in the fifth thanks to a Lesieur double and Sam Trybus’ two-run single. And three McCann Tech errors helped the Mounties score four in the bottom of the sixth to establish a 12-run margin and end the game with one out in the frame.

Mount Greylock (5-3) also plays on Wednesday; it goes to Mount Everett to take on the Eagles.
