Mounties Make Warriors Pay For Mistakes

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Wahconah softball team made the big hits, but Mount Greylock did the little things necessary to earn a 3-2 home win in the final game of the regular season on Wednesday.

Bayleigh MacHaffie and Kelcie Yarmey each had solo home runs for the Warriors, but the Mounties clinched the win by making zero errors in the field. Wahconah (13-7) ended up with four miscues on the day, one of which allowed Greylock to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Another error allowed senior Michaela DiNicola to reach base one inning later, and the Mounties made the visitors pay with an RBI double by classmate Caitie Benoit. Senior Sierra Holland later added an insurance run in the same inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Meredith Dezieck.

That 3-0 lead would be enough for sophomore starter Heather Tomkowicz, who struck out 10 batters and didn't allow a single walk the entire game. Tomkowicz did give up the two homers but only allowed one other hit the rest of the game to improve her record to 15-5 this season.

"Heather had another solid performance on the mound," Greylock head coach June Blake said. "She did a great job of staying ahead of the batters and mixing things up."

Becca Grunow took the loss for the Warriors, allowing one earned run on five hits while fanning two batters.

The Mounties finished the regular season on a tear, winning six out its last seven games to finish with a record of 15-5. Both the Greylock and Wahconah finished with 10-4 league records, leaving them tied for second place and one game behind North Division champion Pittsfield. There is a very good chance that these two quality squads could meet up again in the Division 2 Western Mass. tournament, which will announce its bracket early next week.
