NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- It's hard to be unhappy with the start of the season for the Mount Greylock boys' basketball team, which picked up its second road win over a North Adams school this week with a 48-39 win over McCann Tech on Friday.
Junior guard Hank Barrett scored 17 points for the second game in a row, while classmates Nathan Majumder and Tyler Picard chipped in with 10 points apiece to lead the Mounties to a 2-0 record. The second half was a tale of two quarters for both teams, with each squad dominating for stretches of the game. Greylock took a 26-20 lead into the half, only to see the Hornets go on a 17-5 run in the third quarter. The Mounties were down 37-31 entering the fourth but closed out the game on a 17-2 streak of their own.
"We struggled to stay focused the entire game, lost the lead and trailed by six going into the fourth quarter," Greylock head coach Bob Thistle said. "We certainly have a lot to work on. However, the kids played hard in the fourth, and it was good to come out with a win. We need to bring four quarters of intensity every night, though."
Although his team got off to a slow start, McCann head coach Justin Kratz was proud of his players' ability to buckle down, get some stops on defense and get themselves back in the game.
"We were happy with holding Greylock to 48 points," Kratz said. "It was a good defensive effort. We got down nine in the first quarter, and we ended up losing by nine. The last three quarters were a dead tie. The bottom line was 23 turnovers cost us the game. Some of it was due to it being the first varsity game for some of the guys and there were some nerves. I like what I saw in terms of effort and heart, though, and we just have to take better care of the ball. Twenty three trips down the floor without a shot can not happen."
Kratz must have been pleased with a balanced scoring effort that saw nine different Hornets break into the scoring column. Senior Brandon Czarnecki was the high man with seven points, while junior Josh Superneau chipped in with six.
McCann next hosts Lenox at 7 p.m. on Monday, while the Mounties welcome Wahconah for a home game at the same time that night.
