Hornets Hang Tough in Loss to Wildcats

LEE, Mass. — It's been a brutal opening stretch of the season for the McCann Tech boys' basketball team. Hopefully, these tough early games against some of the elite teams in Berkshire County will prepare the Hornets well for their Tri-County League competition.

Justin Kratz's team fell to Lee 75-44 on Tuesday, marking the fourth straight game that McCann lost to a South Division powerhouse. So far, the Hornets have lost to three different teams with a combined record of 12-2.

"We're getting better at some things," Kratz said. "The guys showed me a lot of fight tonight, which I was glad to see. We had some mental lapses in the first half, which led to the Lee lead. Then we didn't do very well against the press in the second half, which helped them extend their lead. Overall, I was pleased that we were able to get our intensity and effort level where it needs to be so now we can work on mechanics and execution."

The Wildcats (3-1) outscored McCann (0-4) in every quarter on Tuesday night, earning a 38-24 lead at the half before breaking the game open with a 20-8 third quarter. Matt Scapin led Lee with a game-high 20 points, while Jake LePrevost chipped in with 14. Senior center Zach Giron led the way for the Hornets with 10 points and four rebounds. Classmate Mike Chappell was tough on the block, scoring eight points to go along with seven rebounds.

McCann next plays at Mount Greylock at 7 p.m. on Monday.
