McCann Gets Caught Up Playing Dean's Game

HOLYOKE, Mass — Sometimes it's not how you play, but whether or not if you're able to play the game you want to play.

The McCann Tech boys' basketball team didn't stay disciplined long enough in its game at Dean Tech on Friday night and, according to head coach Justin Kratz, it costs the Hornets a 48-39 road defeat.

"We played right into their hands," Kratz said. "They wanted to play a street-ball game, and we fell right into it instead of playing disciplined basketball like we needed to. This resulted in us having 28 turnovers. When we ran our offenses we were successful, but we only ran seven set plays in the first half. Our defense was fine. I was happy with holding them to 48, but we could have held them to 40 and still lost. We did not play our game offensively. We let them dictate what we were going to do, and it cost us."

The Golden Hawks got the better of the back-and-forth game in the first quarter, jumping out to a 10-4 lead after one. The Hornets (4-7) did a nice job of tying the game up by halftime, but they only netted eight points in the third quarter and were outscored by nine  points overall in the second half.

Senior forward Mike Chappell had a good night for McCann, recording a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Nate Gutmann added eight points and four assists, while senior center Zach Giron chipped in with six points and nine boards.

Dean's Christian Heredia tied Chappell with a game-high of 18 points. The Hornets next host Pioneer Valley Christian School at 7 p.m. on Monday.
