Pittsfield’s Szofia Lewis and McCann Tech’s Ethan Sheldon rang in the new year in style this week.

Lewis played a big part in a big win at the Boys & Girls Club on Tuesday, when the Generals edged rival St. Joseph, 50-44.

She swam the anchor leg on the meet-clinching 4-by-100 freestyle relay and won the 200-yard individual medley and 100 breastroke, the latter in time that qualified her for the State Championships.

“That was a lifetime best,” Pittsfield coach Jim Harrington said of Lewis’ 1 minute, 12.73 second finish in the event. “Her season goal was to make state championships, and she did that.”

The McCann Tech boys basketball team still has a long way to go in reaching its goals this winter, but the Hornets are off to a good start with two wins this week to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Sheldon scored 18 points in Tuesday’s win over Pioneer Valley Christian and 14 two nights later in a win over St. Mary’s.

He leads the Hornets this winter with 19.5 points per game going into Monday’s game at Westfield Tech.
