This week's iBerkshires.com/Bedard Bros. Athletes of the Week and their teams have enjoyed the comforts of home and made the most of that home court advantage to start the season.

McCann Tech's Logan Tower and Hoosac Valley's Alie Mendel are averaging 19 and 20 points, respectively, as they have led their teams to 2-0 starts.

Tower opened the year with a team-high 23 against Hampden Charter and followed that up with a solid 14 in a more balanced Hornet attack two nights later against Lenox.

“It’s nice to have, we have a lot of plays for [Tower],” McCann Tech coach Chris Bullett said. “With Lukas inside, it’s nice for them to play off each other. They have been playing together for four years. It’s nice to watch.”

Hoosac Valley fans have been watching Alie Mendel dazzle since her freshman year, when she averaged eight points per game in the fourth of five straight Western Mass title campaigns for the Hurricanes.

Now a junior, she has the team pointed in the right direction in its drive for six after averaging 20 points and earning tournament MVP honors as the 'Canes won their season-opening holiday tourney.

Mendel also had three assists in Saturday's win, an 18-point win over a Greenfield team that went 19-2 a year ago.

The iBerkshires.com Athlete of the Week is sponsored by Bedard Bros. Auto of Cheshire.
