Recap for the game: Pittsfield vs Mount Greylock on Jan 07
Greylock Goes Down in OT Loss to Pittsfield
08:27PM / Monday, January 09, 2012
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — At least the Mount Greylock boys' basketball team lost its first game of the season in dramatic fashion.
With a perfect 6-0 record to start the season, the Mounties battled Pittsfield all game long in a back-and-forth contest that turned out to be one of the more entertaining games at Saturday's Coaches vs. Cancer tournament held at MCLA. Greylock looked like it was heading for a 7-0 mark when Generals center Brendan Hamel knocked in a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to push the game into overtime. Pittsfield then started quickly in the extra frame, scoring seven out of the first nine points to pull away with a 68-63 win.
It was a big win for the Generals (5-3), who broke a three-game losing streak of their own while handing Greylock its first defeat of the year. Pittsfield also picked up a victory against their former head coach of the past four seasons. Mounties' coach Bob Thistle changed positions at the two schools after taking a teaching job at Greylock over the summer.
"It was a great game and a playoff-type atmosphere," Thistle said. "We are disappointed that we lost, but we know that it will benefit us down the road."
Keiland Cross led all scorers with 21 points for the Generals. The Mounties were paced by junior center Tyler Picard, who netted 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Tyrell Thomas added 17 points and four assists for Greylock, which also got nine points apiece from juniors Nathan Majumder and Hank Barrett.
After scoring just one point at halftime, Hamel collected 11 more throughout the second half and overtime period. The Mounties next play a key South Division game at Lenox at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
