One is the first offensive option on his team, the other is a solid second in that department, and Athletes of the Week Kendra Williams and Sean McCormack have their respective teams sitting pretty atop their league standings as the regular season draws to a close.

Mount Greylock junior McCormack is scoring 17.5 points and is the top rebounder on a team that has won 13 straight games going into Monday’s regular season finale against Easthampton.

Two of those wins came this week over Berkshire County North Division foes as the South Division champions cemented their position as one of the best boys teams in all of Berkshire County.

On Wednesday in the Berkshire Classic, the Mounties went on the road to North leader Taconic, and McCormack scored 24 points in a decisive 71-49 win. Two nights later, he scored 20 points in a defensively-minded 54-36 win over Wahconah.

That came at the end of a five-game-in-eight-days stretch for Mount Greylock that included wins over three South opponents, including the league-clinching win over Monument Mountain on Saturday, Feb. 11, that saw McCormack score 22 and grab 17 boards.

If you extend the “Week” definition in Athlete of the Week to go from Saturday to Friday, he averaged 19.25 points over four games for a team that figures to be one of the top seeds in the Western Mass Division 3 tournament when pairings are announced on Saturday.

Look for Lee’s girls to be among the favorites in D4.

Lee senior Williams came up huge in Thursday’s South-clinching win at Mount Greylock. Besides tying for team-high scoring honors with nine points, she had the single biggest rebound and assist to set up Shannon Finnegan’s game-tying 3-pointer at the end of regulation.

Williams already was a big factor in the game with eight points in a pivotal 14-6 second half run that allowed the Wildcats to come from behind and get in position for Finnegan’s game-saving shot.

And Williams hit a foul shot in the low scoring 3-2 overtime period that allowed Lee (16-3) to come away with a 40-39 win.

“She had a great second half,” Lee coach Rick Puleri said. “I'm always telling these guys, 'Listen, you guys have to continue to shoot even if they're not falling. The right shot is the right shot. You've got to keep shooting the ball.' And she knocked them in in the second half.”
