WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — It's been over two weeks since the Mount Greylock girls' basketball team defeated McCann Tech by 28 points. The Hornets earned their first victory of the season since then, however, and almost pulled out another win on Wednesday before the Mounties rallied back for a 47-41 victory at home.

Mike Dowling's squad got off to a fast start, opening a 10-5 lead after the first quarter. Greylock (3-3) bounced back to trail by one at halftime, but it still couldn't shake loose of McCann (1-4) until blowing up for a 19-point fourth quarter. Sophomore guard Lucy Barrett hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a 17-point night. She also added five rebounds and four assists, while fellow guard Arianna Walden chipped in with 11 points and three boards.

"We were able to survive in this one," Mounties head coach Paul Barrett said. "McCann struggled from the free-throw line, and we were able to pick it up in the fourth quarter. Margot Besnard (five points) hit a huge three in the fourth quarter and had her second nine-rebound effort on the boards."

The Hornets will likely be hitting the free-throw line in practice today after going 5 of 21 from the charity stripe on Wednesday. Senior guard Mary Nguyen led the way for McCann with 17 points, while junior forward Emijah Barton helped out with 13.

Greylock next plays at St. Joe's at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hornets play at Belchertown at the same time on Friday.
