'Canes Come Up with Tight Win over Braves

PITTSFIELD, Mass — The Hoosac Valley girls' basketball team hasn't really been in any close games this season, so it must have made head coach Ron Wojcik happy to see his Hurricanes pull out a down-to-the-wire 44-42 win at Taconic on Monday night.

Hoosac (8-2) put some distance between itself and the Braves by going up 11 points in the third quarter. Taconic (3-7) came back to cut the deficit to five points, however, before both teams duked it out in a back-and-forth fourth quarter.

"It was a tight game throughout," Wojcik said. "We made a run in the third quarter, but Taconic came right back to make the game close in the final quarter. Down the stretch, we went 4 of 6 from the free-throw line, and Taconic went 0 of 4. That was the difference."

Junior point guard Tori Rumbolt played solid defense and scored all six of her points from the charity stripe for the Hurricanes, who took a narrow 22-21 lead into the locker room at halftime. Sophomore guard Jenn Gale led the Hoosac offense by draining four 3-pointers to finish with a team-high 12 points. Senior forward Erica Mach chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Emily Rosse added seven points and a team-high 12 boards.

Nyanna Slaughter scored a game-high 13 points for the Braves, who also received three triples and 11 points from Angela O'Neil.

The 'Canes are back in action on Thursday night, when they host Wahconah at 7:30 p.m.
