Greylock Gets Going Quickly Against Everett

SHEFFIELD, Mass. — A slow start was the main reason for the Mount Greylock girls' basketball team's loss to Lenox last week. It was only fitting then that the Mounties would flip the switch in their next game against Mount Everett.

Greylock busted out the gates quickly, jumping out to a 15-6 lead over the host Eagles after just one quarter of play. Everett played tough the rest of the game but was unable to close the Mounties' lead to less than three, eventually losing 42-33.

Seniors Sierra Holland and Kaylene Lemme had a big say in helping Greylock improve its season record to 3-3. Holland netted a game-high 11 points to go with eight rebounds, while Lemme chipped in with 10 points and a team-high 11 boards. Freshman Lucy Barrett finished with eight points, going a perfect 8 for 8 from the foul line, including four in the fourth quarter when the Eagles (5-4) had cut the Mounties' lead down to three.

Tara Sullivan led Everett in scoring with 10 points. She also had seven rebounds and four blocked shots, numbers that paled in comparision to her last game when she put up a triple-double of 19 points, 14 rebounds and 13 blocked shots against Hoosac Valley. Greylock head coach Paul Barrett said senior Catie Benoit played a big role in containing the Eagles' top palyer.

"Catie continues to improve and defended Tara Sullivan well, pulling down 10 rebounds and holding Tara, with the help of her teammates, to a modest effort compared to her triple-double against Hoosac on Friday," Barrett said. "We had balanced scoring from Sierra and Kaylene, along with a couple of big hoops from Kelsey Goodwin. Lucy's four free throws down the stretch enabled us to hold off a pesky, physical and hustling Mount Everett squad."

Greylock next meets up with South Division rival Hoosac Valley for a road game at 7 p.m. on Friday night.
