CHESHIRE, Mass. -- Senior Emily Rosse and sophomore Fallon Field led the Hoosac Valley girls basketball team in their 58-36 win over Wahconah Thursday evening at Hoosac Valley High School.

Field finished with 19 points for the Hurricanes, seven coming in the third quarter when they were able to pull away from Wahconah and seal the win. Rosse fell right behind Field with 18 points.

The first half was neck and neck between the two teams; Wahconah took the lead from Hoosac in the final minute of the first quarter; to put the score at 17-16.

Both teams were running the court in the second quarter and both were pressuring full court. They were getting the ball down low and putting up quick layups. Going into the second half it was tied at 26.

“I thought we did a good job in the first half of taking it to them,” Wahconah coach Liz Kay said. “But, when they made that run there’s a different look that comes over everybody’s face, and he [Ron Wojcik] made great adjustments, you know he’s going in at half-time and making adjustments.”

Adjustments were made on Hoosac’s side in the second half. The Hurricanes came out and aside from their normal zone defense they were in man to man.

“Well it was our man, but with trapping, we run a man with trapping in it,” Wojcik said. “I thought the difference in the third quarter was the girls started pressuring the ball more and once we started that and forcing them to mistakes we got our transition game going.”

Hoosac went on a 10-0 run in the final two minutes of the third quarter to pull away from Wahconah and went into the final eight minutes with a 43-31 lead.

“You wait for the patented Hoosac run,” Kay said. “And they made the run and to their credit when they make a run like that, most teams can’t recover from it.”

Maddie Sprague finished the game with 13 points for Wahconah and Julia O’Connor had 10.

Hoosac hosts Athol at 4:30 Saturday afternoon and Wahconah plays Granby at 1:30 at Hoosac Valley as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase.
