MCLA'S Tim Jay to appear on NPR's "This American Life"

NORTH ADAMS - Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Professor of Psychology and expert on cursing Timothy Jay will appear on National Public Radio's "This American Life," which airs this Friday on WAMC from 10:00-11:00 p.m. and again on Saturday from 4:00-5:00 p.m. During the program, Jay participates in a dialogue on impropriety with host Ira Glass, as well as Brent Bozell from the Parents Television Council and a representative from the Federal Communications Council regarding some recent FCC decisions as they relate to appropriate language. Jay is a nationally renowned expert on cursing and has written four books on the subject including Why We Curse, What To Do When Your Kids Talk Dirty, What To Do When Your Students Talk Dirty and Cursing in America. He is currently working on a book chapter for a text on women, language, and religion to be published in early 2005. Jay is collaborating on research on perception and memory processes for taboo words with Catherine Harris from Boston University and Don MacKay from UCLA. Additionally, he is working on research on parents' and children's language values with research assistants Kristin Janschewitz, Tim Quinones, and April Tovani from MCLA. Jay has been with the Department of Psychology at MCLA since 1976. Prior to that he worked as a teaching fellow at Kent State University. Jay received his B.A. in psychology from Miami University in 1972, his M.A. in cognitive psychology from Kent State University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from the same institution in 1976.

Senior Golf Series Returns in September

PITTSFIELD, Mass. -- The Berkshire County Fall Senior Golf series returns in September with events on five consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 18.
 
It is the 22nd year of the series, which is a fund-raiser for junior golf in the county, and it is open to players aged 50 and up.
 
The series will feature two divisions for each event based on the combined ages of the playing partners.
 
Golfers play from the white tees (or equivalent) with participants 70 and over or who have a handicap of more than 9 able to play from the forward tees.
 
Gross and net prices will be available in each division.
 
The cost is $55 per event and includes a round of golf, food and prizes. Carts are available for an additional fee.
 
Golfers should call the pro shop at the course for that week's event no sooner than two weeks before the event to register.
