The managers of The Spruces mobile home park in Williamstown want to increase rents by $50, and have asked the town’s mobile home rent control board to approve the proposal, effective Sept. 1.
One longtime resident, who did not want her name used, said the increase is “Much too much.â€
“Most people here are retired, on fixed incomes,†she said.
Said another, “Many people here can’t afford the higher rent.â€
According to a letter dated June 30 to the Williamstown Mobile Home Rent Control Board, Fusco Management Co. of New Haven, Conn., is petitioning to raise rent for small lots from $222.50 to $271, and for large lots from $343.90 to $284.
Neither figures include the monthly mobile home tax of $6 a month.
In its letter, Fusco Management said the last rent increase approved for The Spruces was in 1995. And, the letter maintains, “those rents no longer reflect the costs of operating the property. Lot rents were reduced in 1998, exacerbating this problem.â€
The only new capital item the company will submit with its petition is storm drainage improvements completed in 1998.
“Competitive bids were not taken for this work, as we elected to use a contractor who has extensive Spruces experience to design and complete the job,†the letter states. “At the time of the project, the Board requirement for three bids was not in effect.â€
Selectmen agreed Monday to postpone for two weeks appointing a new member to fill the vacancy on the board. Selectmen Chairman Margaret Johnson Ware suggested the postponement, saying there are two candidates, and a possible third, for the vacancy.
