Housatonic Swim League Championships

The Housatonic Swim League, consisting of summer recreational teams from North Canaan/Falls Village, Sharon, Salisbury, and Cornwall, held its summer championships Wednesday, August 4th at the Town Grove beach in Lakeville. The championships included only one heat per event for each age category, allowing only the top eight swimmers in the league to compete. The swimmers, ages 5 through 18, were selected within each age category after preliminary competitions on Tuesday. Judges and timers were consistently firm on insisting that swimmers perform the strokes correctly and follow start, turn and finish rules; swimmers that did not comply were disqualified. In the medley relay, consisting of four swimmers assigned to freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke, Salisbury took first place in the 8-and-under, 9/10, and 11/12 age groups, with Cornwall taking first place in the 13/14 age category, and Sharon’s team winning first place in the 15-18 age category. In the freestyle event, first place finishes were seen from Salisbury’s Kristen Fisher, Megan Williams, and Elizabeth Bucceri, Cornwall’s Sam Green, Hilary Rogers, and Caroline Kosciusko, Sharon’s Nate Willard and Brooks Gerli, and North Canaan/Falls Village’s Steven Wingard and Steven Bunce. Second place wins in this event were by Christine Rogers, Hudsen Timon, and Sam Cadman of Salisbury, Alex Vernalli, Regan Carroll of North Canaan/Falls Village, Zach Crane, Kaitlyn Mo, Bennett Gerli of Sharon, and Stewart and Jamie Green of Cornwall. Freestyle third place finishers were North Canaan/Falls Village’s Kelly Sprague, Salisbury’s Carter Timon, Megan Frey, Marne Timon, Will Parker, Cullen White, Shawn Healy, Graham Corrigan, and Sharon’s Bradley Visconti and Allison Casey. In the backstroke competition, first place was won by North Canaan/Falls Village swimmers Ali Perotti, Matthew Bongiolatti, Steven Bunce, and Melissa White, Salisbury’s Morgan Lamb, and Jacob Lamb, Cornwall’s Shelby Baird and Katherine Stewart, and Sharon’s Gavin Latour, and Bennett Gerli. Second place finishes were seen from North Canaan/Falls Village’s Jessica Shortledge and Kylee Parsons, Cornwall’s Sam Green, Salisbury’s Anna Heisenbuttel, Cullen White, Shawn Healy, and Sharon’s Zach Crane, Bradley Visconti, Allison Casey, and David Shaw. Third place winners were Kelly Sprague and Timothy Demming of North Canaan/Falls Village, Zach Zuckerman, Erica Kavanagh, Nick Dzenutis, and James Gold of Cornwall, Salisbury’s Lydia Martin, Olivia Lange, and Laura Alexander. In the breast stroke event, first place finishes came from Salisbury’s Alexandra Rawlings, Eric Chin, and Elizabeth Bucerri, North Canaan/Falls Village’s Regan Carroll, and Tanner Brissett, Sharon’s Zach Crane, Gavin LaTour, and Cornwall’s Hilary Rogers, Erica Kavanagh, and James Gold. Second place in breast stroke was taken by Salisbury’s Kristen Fisher, Ethan Watt, Olivia Martin, Anna Corrigan, Cornwall’s Zach Zuckerman, Laigle, Mulberry, and Jamie Green, North Canaan/Falls Village’s Steven Wingard, and Sharon’s Kaitlyn Mo. Third place wins were seen from North Canaan’s Kelly Sprague, Salisbury’s Megan Frey, Megan Fisher, Raffi Frounduam, Tim Kruger, and Laura Alexander, Sharon’s Alex Mo, and David Shaw, and Cornwall’s Duffee. The butterfly event saw first place finishes from Salisbury’s Alexandra Rawlings, Megan Williams, Kyle Good, Cornwall’s Zach Busby, Shelby Baird, and Caroline Kosciusko, North Canaan/Falls Village’s Steven Wingard, and Melissa White, and Sharon’s Nate Willard and Brooks Gerli. Second place finishers were Salisbury’s Christine Rogers, Eric Chin, Morgan Lamb, Raffi Froundjian and Graham Corrigan, Cornwall’s Brian Hurlburt, Erica Kavanagh, James Gold, and Liz Sawicki, and Sharon’s Ellen Casey. Third place finishes were taken by Salisbury’s Megan Fisher, Slava Browning, Emily Parker, Kathryn Fisher, Karen Hutchings, and Zach Neville, Cornwall’s Mary Kate Kosciusko and Ryan St. John, and North Canaan/Falls Village’s Carlos Perez. The Individual Medley race required each competitor to swim all four strokes. First place finishes were taken by Salisbury’s Alexandra Rawlings, Jacob Lamb, Morgan Lamb, and Hudsen Timon, Cornwall’s Hilary Rogers, and Caroline Kosciusko, Sharon’s Nate Willard and Brooks Gerli, and North Canaan/Falls Village’s Tanner Brissett and Melissa White. Second place winners were Salisbury’s Eric Chin, Megan Frey, Will Parker, Frank Cadman, and Elizabeth Bucceri, Cornwall’s Myles Clohessy, Erica Kavanagh, and Jamie Green, and Sharon’s Bennett Gerli. Third place finishes were seen by Cornwall’s Mary Kate Kosciusko, Kale Prentice, and Katherine Stewart, Sharon’s Chelsey Kniffen, and Kaitlyn Mo, North Canaan/Falls Village’s Steven Bunce, and Salisbury’s Shawn Healy. The free relay had five age categories competing, with first place wins for Salisbury’s team in the 8-and-under group, and the 9/10 age group, for North Canaan/Falls Village in the 11/12 age group, for Cornwall in the 13/14 age group, and for Sharon in the 15-18 age group. “We congratulate all the swimmers,” said Darcy Victory, the North Canaan/Falls Village coach. “Everyone did an excellent job with swimming this summer, and all of the coaches hope to see these kids, and more, next summer.”

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
