North Adams - In their annual Halloween merriment the production crew at MASS MoCA will dust off the 1925 version of Phantom of the Opera for a scream, that is, screening on Saturday, October 29, at 8 P.M.
The always-inventive Alloy Orchestra returns with their trademark assortment of junk – horseshoes, truck springs, radiator pipes, sheet metal, and vacuum cleaner canisters – to provide a live musical soundtrack and percussive backdrop to one of the true film gems of the silent horror genre.
With moody sets and murky patterns of shadows and light the film, heavily influenced by German Expressionism, set the tone and style for Universal Studio’s horror film cycle of the 1930s. Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame all owe a debt to this groundbreaking film which almost didn’t see the light of day. Shot in 1923 it went through several directors including Lon Chaney (who starred as the Phantom), was subjected to intensive studio tinkering, and shelved for two years.
When finally released many predicted disaster, but its innovative use of then costly two-strip Technicolor process in key scenes and Chaney’s riveting performance held the film together. The moment his mask is stripped away and the phantom’s face, far from the now traditional half-handsome/half-scarred, is revealed remains one of the most chilling in movie history.
Alloy Orchestra is a three-man musical group, writing and performing live accompaniment to classic silent films, with Terry Donahue playing percussion, accordion, and vocals; Ken Winokur on percussion and clarinet; and Roger C. Miller on synthesizer. An unusual combination of found percussion and state-of-the-art electronics gives the Orchestra the ability to create any sound imaginable.
Lickety Split will be open to serve full dinners and snacks starting at 7 P.M. when the doors open. There will also be a full bar.
The film is presented in conjunction with the Williamstown Film Festival and prizes will be awarded for best costumes including a category for Best Disfigured Lunatic.
Tickets to Phantom of the Opera with Alloy Orchestra are $14 in advance, $17 the day of the show, and $10 for students. MASS MoCA members get 10% off. Tickets are available through the MASS MoCA Box Office located on Marshall Street in North Adams from 10 A.M. until 6 P.M. daily. Tickets can also be charged by phone by calling 413.662.2111 during Box Office hours or online at www.massmoca.org at any time of day.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
