Williamstown - Williams College mailed its traditional notification letters of acceptance on December 14, to 221 of the 554 applicants to the Class of 2010 under the college's early decision program. Applications for early decision increased by 5 percent over last year. Williams early decision program has been in place since 1964. The accepted students for the Class of 2010 represent 41 percent of the projected class size of 538. Admission decisions are made regardless of a student's financial ability and the college provides grants and other assistance to meet the demonstrated need of all who are admitted. Forty-nine percent of the Class of 2009 received financial aid. Factors cited by students who apply for admission to Williams are academic reputation, size of the college, personal attention, attractiveness of the campus, academic facilities, and extracurricular opportunities. "Once again the admissions committee was extremely impressed with the strength of the applicant pool and its diversity," Director Richard Nesbitt said. "The newly admitted students come from 39 states and 13 foreign countries. One hundred men and 121 women were accepted. African Americans comprise 8 percent of the admitted students, Asian Americans 8 percent, and Latinos 5 percent. International students account for 5 percent of the early admit group." "They are all extremely talented individuals," he said. "They'll bring to their classrooms, extracurricular activities, and campus life remarkable personal strength. Williams is well on its way to enrolling once again a strong entering class." Preview Programs for admitted students will be held in April. These programs give students the chance not only to attend classes, to meet faculty and to experience college life here firsthand, but also to meet the people who will be their future classmates. The deadline to apply for regular admission is Jan. 1, with notification from the college due around April 1. Classes in the 2006-07 academic year begin Sept. 7, 2006, preceded by the traditional First Days for entering students.
