Victor Rolando, an expert in Vermont industrial archaeology, will be giving a talk on the Burden Iron Works in Vermont. The Burden Iron Works was established in Troy, N.Y. in the 1800's and produced finished iron goods such as horseshoes. The factory boasted of having the most powerful water wheel in the world, invented by the owner, Henry Burden. The factory had ties to Vermont which included two towns, Shaftsbury and North Bennington Admission is free.
Walter Ungerer and Michael Fisher: Battling the Demons

Walter Ungerer's The Animal is a film about loss, fate, and the unknowable. A man and a woman meet at a deserted railroad station in the middle of winter. Driving to a remote farmhouse they observe inexplicable things and experience isolation and alienation. Michael Fisher's Falls is a short film in which a young woman's dream of becoming a tightrope walker isolates her and causes her father anguish on their Vermont farm.$5 per person
Michael Fox Kennedy as Abraham Lincoln

The Bennington Historical Society will be presenting Michael Fox Kennedy as Abraham Lincoln. He was inspired to create "Even we here...", a play whose language comes from Lincoln's own words, by a love for Lincoln and a belief that Lincoln's words could strengthen our understanding of the ideals and principles on which the nation is founded. Admission is free.
Deb Ellis and John Douglas: Politics as (Un)Usual

Deb Ellis's Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train documents the life and times of the historian, activist, and author of the best selling classic A People's History of the United States. Mr. Zinn will be invited. John Douglas's The Whitehouse is a short film mixing digital with real imagery, and surreal views with subversive political content. $5 per person

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.

For the boys, Ward Bianchi helped lead the way with a win in the shot put and a second place in the javelin as the Mounties finished 16 points ahead of runner-up Pittsfield (pending the results of the pole vault, which were unavailable at 11 p.m. Friday night). click for more
