BMC has a new geriatric specialist

Pittsfield – Berkshire Medical Center announces the appointment of Karen G. Kelly, M.D., a specialist in Geriatric Medicine and Internal Medicine, to the BMC Medical Staff. Dr. Kelly is accepting geriatric patients for consultation by referral in her practice at the Hillcrest Family Health Center, located at the BMC Hillcrest Campus, 165 Tor Court, Pittsfield. Dr. Kelly is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics. She came to the Berkshires after more than 20-years in Philadelphia. She has practiced and taught geriatric medicine for over 15-years, most recently on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, working in the Geriatric Clinic at the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. She has also conducted research and lectured widely on such topics as delirium, medication usage, nutrition and sexual function in the geriatric population. While in Philadelphia, she also served on the Board of Directors of Dunwoody, a large Continuing Care Retirement Community. She has previously served as Director of Medical Education and Director of the Geriatric Fellowship at the Philadelphia Geriatric Center and was Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine for the Department of Medicine at Temple University Hospital. Additionally, she has served as a physician with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was medical consultant for the geriatric psychiatry service, Wills Eye Hospital and Frankford Hospital, all in Philadelphia. She has also served as a Clinical Instructor of Medicine for Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Kelly received her Medical Degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She interned and completed her residency training at Temple University Hospital. Dr. Kelly has an undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College. Dr. Kelly is a member of the American Geriatrics Society. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
