North Adams - A seasoned live performer, Toshi Reagon jumped into the spotlight when Lenny Kravitz tapped her to open for him on his first world tour.
Elvis Costello asked Reagon and her band, BIGLovely, to back him up on a Late Show with David Letterman appearance after catching one of her high energy performances in New York City. She and her trio will perform as part of MASS MoCA’s Alt Cabaret series on Saturday, March 25, at 8 PM. According to The New Yorker "[Reagon’s] live shows shower retro funk, urban blues, and folk on the audience with evangelical fervor. To hear her is to believe."
Reagon is a "talent deserving wider recognition," according to Curve Magazine which went on to say, "It’s a safe bet that she’ll never be a superstar as she shows zero interest in bending herself to fashion, glamour or trend, but her talent is as accessible as it is huge. Boasting a voice that can be either confessional or soul-shout broad and a bona fide songwriting talent, Toshi Reagon is a treasure waiting to be found."
Born in Atlanta and raised in Washington, D.C., Toshi Reagon cites her family as the source of her musical abilities. Both parents belonged to SNCC’s Freedom Singers, a folk group that sprang from the Civil Rights movement and toured the country. Her mother, Bernice Johnson Reagon, is the founder of the world renowned a capella group Sweet Honey In The Rock.
Toshi Reagon has played a wide variety of venues, from a Central Park Summerstage benefit and Joni Mitchell tribute with artists like Vernon Reid and Chaka Kahn, to a tribute to Prince where she tore up the stage with her version of the classic 1999, to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Blood On The Tracks concert in New York City celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Bob Dylan album. She’s also performed with Nona Hendryx, Pete Seeger, Chocolate Genius, Dar Williams, and Ani Difranco, just to name a few.
Tickets for Toshi Reagon are $14 in advance or $17 the day of the concert. MASS MoCA members receive a 10% discount. Tickets are available through the MASS MoCA Box Office located off Marshall Street in North Adams, open from 11 A.M. to 5 P.M. Wednesday through Monday. Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
