“Hello from snowy Lexington, Virginia,†said Eph head coach of women’s tennis Julie Greenwood when she called in to report that her Ephs had defeated Pomona College 5-2 in their first match of the Fab Five Tournament being hosted by Washington & Lee University.
A surprise snowstorm of 3-4 inches moved the Ephs’ match against the Sagehens indoors and made it one played to determination via the 8-point scoring system. The snowy conditions likely will force a cancellation of the Ephs scheduled second match of the day against #12 Carnegie Mellon as there are only four indoor courts for use.
Williams is now 6-1 on the year, while Pomona falls to 7-4.
“We came here to play against good competition and we played a very young and talented Pomona team [four freshmen in the lineup] which had just beaten Tufts 6-3 yesterday so this was another good win for us,†noted Greenwood. “We still need to be more aggressive in each match and on each point and not give away loose points.â€
Williams won at one and three doubles and claimed victories at one, two and three singles to claim the 5-2 win. The Ephs lost at number two doubles and at number five singles. The singles matches at four and six were not completed as the outcome of the match had been determined and it would give the other teams in the tournament a better chance to complete their matches.
If the Ephs are unable to play Carnegie Mellon later today then their next match will be tomorrow morning against defending NCAA Div. 3 champion Emory University.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
