"Like many others, I had loved the film adaptation of Elizabeth von Arnim's most successful novel, Enchanted April" says Noël, "which she began in 1922 while staying in a castle on the Italian Riviera for the month of April. During that time, she began an affair with a young WWI veteran, thirty years younger than her, having recently emerged from an unhappy marriage with Bertrand Russell's brother. It is during this affair that she writes of two women who decide to slip out from under the emotional and spiritual death-knell of others' expectations of living a "blind sort of goodness", and choosing instead, an "enlightened one".
Enchanted April unfolds in dreary postwar London of 1922 where two rain-soaked housewives, Lotty Wilson (Prusha), and Rose Aronot (Randolph) join a glamorous socialite and a lonely widow in a rented castle in Italy for the month of April. As the women succumb to the beauty of the Italian castle they have escaped to they begin to undo the class system, discover new relationships, beauty and a new outlook on life.
This season marks Noël's 27th year with S&Co as an actor, playwright and director. Noël will also perform in her one-woman play No Background Music opening in Founders' August 1st taking on the heart-wrenching role of army nurse Penny Rock. Other S&Co credits include, The Chekov One Acts, Roman Fever, The Other Two, An International Episode, Jack and Jill, All's Well That Ends Well, Betrayal, Off the Map, Songs From the Heart, Mercy, Women of Will part III, Fortune and Misfortune, Virginia, Hamlet, and The Monkey's Paw. Ventfort Hall in Lenox: The Belle of Amherst; The Sea Horse. The Nora Theatre, Boston: Xinghu. Mixed Company, Great Barrington: Talking With. Berkshire Public Theatre: On the Verge.
"Matthew Barber's play, the third telling of this story," adds Noël beautifully reflects the novelist's light hand and comic send up of stolid and deadening patriarchal values, and invites us to find the magic of living. The play delighted me, and had wonderful parts for many of our actors. The proximity of audience to actors in the Founders' three-quarter thrust stage serves the intimacy of the play beautifully, and our dedicated Salon/Wharton audience, I think, will approve."

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant
Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.
"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.
A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.
White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.
He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.
Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.
A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
