Art reception and piano performance events at EPOCH Assisted Living

Local painter Marguerite Bride will be the featured artist at EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne throughout February. A reception for Bride to open the exhibit will be held in EPOCH’s gallery on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 4 p.m. This reception will feature her watercolor paintings of various collections, including Berkshire Street Scenes, Tuscany, Local Color, House Portraits, and Berkshires Bounty. The reception is free and open to the public, but a reservation is requested at 413-499-1992. Since moving to the Berkshires in 1995, Bride, a former nurse, has turned her attention to painting in earnest. Watercolor is her current medium of choice, but Bride has also worked in oils and printmaking, utilizing the collograph method. She has also done graphic design and is in the process of writing and illustrating a series of children’s picture books based upon the lives and antics of her golden retrievers. She has spent the last couple of years capturing the beauty and serenity of all seasons of New England in her paintings. Other strong interests include the sights, textures and colors of Tuscany. Her pieces have been featured on the cover of Berkshire Home Style magazine and Hebert Candy catalog. She often paints house portraits, having been commissioned to paint more than 50 homes throughout the Northeast United States. As EPOCH at Melbourne’s featured artist for February, Bride’s work will be on display in the community’s art gallery and open for visitors between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day. EPOCH is located at 140 Melbourne Road. Pianist Tchougarian to Perform Armenian piano virtuoso Karen Tchougarian will bring his distinguished and international talent to EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne on Friday, Feb. 2, at 3 p.m. EPOCH Assisted Living is located at 140 Melbourne Road. Tchougarian studied at the Komitas University in Armenia and the University of Arkansas. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music and has won many performance competitions, including the 1999 Artists International Auditions. As the winner, Tchougarian made a fully sponsored debut at Carnegie Hall. Tchougarian will perform a full range of music from classical to movie scores, jazz and waltz. Part of EPOCH Assisted Living’s programs for residents, this performance is open to visitors at not charge but a reservation is requested at 413-499-1992.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building. 

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu. 

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building. 

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.  

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns. 

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot. 

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
