Presentation to discuss new funding option for seniors

PITTSFIELD — EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne will welcome Chris Orestis, principal of Life Care Funding Group, a firm that specializes in insurance matters, to discuss a new funding option for seniors called a Life Settlement.

This option allows seniors who want or need to move into an assisted living, independent living or long-term care community to preserve many of their primary assets as part of the family estate instead of selling their home in the current economy that is not seller-friendly. The presentation, free and open to the public, will be held at EPOCH, located at 140 Melbourne Road, on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 1:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served

A Life Settlement is the sale of a life insurance policy by the policy holder while still living to an institutional investor that will pay a lot more for the policy than the cash “surrender” value. The seller receives a lump sum payment which requires no repayment because it is not a loan. The goal of a Life Settlement is to help seniors raise funds so that they can afford to cover today’s expenses and plan with confidence for a comfortable retirement.

EPOCH Assisted Living at Melbourne will offer the Life Settlement option to prospective residents. “Our goal is to support our residents and make it easy for new residents to move in,” said Diane Weinstein, EPOCH’s executive director. “A Life Settlement may make a lot of sense for people reviewing their options.”

Chris Orestis is an acknowledged expert on insurance and long term care issues. He represented the health and life insurance industry as vice president and senior vice president, respectively, for the Health Insurance Association of America and the American Council of Life Insurers. He is a featured columnist and contributing editor to a number of industry publications.
