Chess For Beginners at North Adams Public Library
Did you ever wonder what is meant by “checkmate”, “stalemate”, “rooks”, “castling”, or “capturing knights”? If so Chess For Beginners at the North Adams Public Library is for you. Come learn these chess plays and more.Besides being loads of fun, playing chess has been shown to improve memory, enhance geometric thinking, promote study skills, provide motivation for reading, increase analytic reasoning and give participants a chance to discover checkmates and (maybe) meet new mates.
This program is being offered in the Children’s Department of the North Adams Public Library by Tim Ahern, a retired teacher and chess club coach. The club will meet for nine Wednesdays from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM starting on Wednesday, October 15, 2008.
Chess sets will be provided. Elementary and Middle School Children and Home Schoolers of similar ages are welcome to register to attend. Space is limited so please stop by to sign up or call the library at 413-662-3133.
