First Annual Jim Lambert Ice Fishing Derby

02:58PM / Friday, January 23, 2009

PITTSFIELD, Mass. - Give a child a fish, and he might wrinkle his nose. Teach a child to fish, though, and you've imparted a skill, as well as a winter activity, for a lifetime.

This is the driving force behind the first annual Jim Lambert Kids and Novices Ice Fishing Derby, to be held on Pontoosuc Lake on Saturday, Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 1p.m. According to Michael Merriam, the event's coordinator, the derby will serve as a fundraiser for two Berkshire-area nonprofits  -- the Elizabeth Freeman Center, and Elder Services of Berkshire County, both in Pittsfield. But it will also serve as a wintertime activity for adults and children, who are invited to participate in the derby and learn about the ins and outs of ice fishing.

"In the summer, the days are packed with things for kids to do," says Merriam. "But in the winter, they get bored. There's not a lot for them to do, and this is a great way to get kids and their parents out of the house to experience a new sport."

Merriam adds that novice fishers, including those who've never lowered a line below the ice, are welcome to sign-up for the derby and to learn from Lambert himself, one of the area's ice fishing masters. Lambert holds the world record for catching the largest tiger muskie, weighing in at 27-pounds, at Pontoosuc Lake.

In addition to the educational component, however, proceeds from the derby will go toward the Elizabeth Freeman Center and Elderly Services of the Berkshires.

In addition, volunteers will be collecting hats, coats, and gloves for the needy and the elderly of Berkshire County; cash donations will also be accepted.

Check-in for participation in the derby is 7:30 a.m., in the lower parking lot of Pontoosac Lake. Trophies will be awarded to winners in each fish weight class, and Merriam stresses that boys and girls of all ages are encouraged to attend. For more information, contact coordinator Michael Merriam at 413-499-4219.

My friend just caught a 27lb. 23/4 oz. tiger on Saturday 2/14 through the ice at Otisco Lake in Upstate NY.
The fish was weighed on a certified scale and witnessed by a NYS DEC agent.
