Olver Announces House Approves $175k For Putnam Road In Lanesborough

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John W. Olver (D-1st District) announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved a funding bill that includes a total of $175,000 for the reconstruction of Putnam Road in Lanesborough.

The Putnam Road crossing over Town Brook sustains damage during severe rain storms on an almost annual basis. The state of the road causes a risk to public safety and the town’s water supply, threatening safe and swift response time of emergency personnel, eroding the stream bank, and straining the DPW budget.

Congressman John Olver said, “The crossing is Lanesborough’s single most maintenance-intensive section of roadway, and MassHighway has inspected the crossing and rated it as failing. It is long past time that we stop doing ‘band-aid repairs’ after every severe storm. This funding will allow the town and the Department of Public Works to repair the road crossing and stream bank to withstand severe weather long into the future.”

Olver secured the funding in the FY10 Homeland Security Appropriations bill, which the House passed on the evening of June 24, 2009. Olver is on the Appropriations Committee and worked to secure the funding. The Senate must still approve its appropriations bill and then both chambers will have to approve a reconciled bill before it goes to the president’s desk to be signed into law.
