NORTH ADAMS, Mass.— Northern Berkshire Healthcare plans to offer courses in first aid and basic life support in January and February.

Heartsaver First Aid with CPR/AED is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Classes will be held in the community room at the VNA/Hospice on Curran Highway.

Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) is designed for people who want or need to learn CPR. Cardiac arrest can result from heart attack, drowning, electric shock and other problems. Studies show that effective CPR, quickly administered, improves survival from cardiac arrest. The course also covers the basics of first aid.

Employees from REACH for Community Health at North Adams Regional Hospital have been certified by the American Heart Association to conduct the community classes.

The course uses a “practice while watching” method. The student will be given a workbook that includes a CD prior to the class.

The cost for Heartsaver First Aid with CPR and AED is $65. Students may opt to take only the CPR portion of the class for $40. The fee for the Basic Life Support course is $65. The fee covers the cost of instruction, the student workbook and certification card.

Upon demonstration of the skills taught in the course, the student will receive a course completion card. For more information or to register for an upcoming CPR or first aid class, call 413-664-5404.
