GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass. — Local actress Sally-Jane Heit will perform her one woman play, "Before I Forget… A Memoir with Music," as a benefit for the Guthrie Center on Sunday, Aug. 8, at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25 and include a Meet the Artist dessert reception following the performance. The event is being sponsored by Kwik Print and Cafe Adam.

Sally-Jane’s professional credentials include film, theater and television. Songs familiar and original help to tell the story as her life’s journey unfolds in a musical and theatrical evening. "The play is about the absurdity of life and in particular my life in relation to that absurdity."

Sally-Jane is performing "Before I Forget" as a benefit performance for community organizations around the country, beginning with her home communities in Great Barrington and Sanibel Island, Fla.

"It is just time to give back. I have a gift.  I didn’t buy it - I nurtured it. That gift makes people laugh. Life is short. Instead of another buy-out or sub-prime whatever ("What does that mean exactly? A leak in the basement?")…let’s get to it." Proceeds from the event will go to support the Guthrie Center and its programs.

The Guthrie Center’s programs have ranged from meditation and prayer to transporting people in need, and from alternative therapies such as massage acupuncture to support for friends and families coping with HIV/AIDS and Huntington’s Disease. The Foundation supports efforts to preserve traditional music, storytelling, medicine, dance and spiritual practices from encroaching globalization. Additional information is available at www.guthriecenter.org.

On July 30, Sally-Jane will be featured on WAMC’s "Performance Place," where she will perform excerpts of "Before I Forget," including songs from the show.

Former Harry's Supermarket Under Construction for Restaurant

By Brittany PolitoiBerkshires Staff

PITTSFIELD, Mass. — Construction is underway to transform the former Harry's Supermarket into a restaurant

Late last month, the Conservation Commission greenlit some tree pruning on the property. New windows and a new door can be seen in the front of the building.

"It's a substantial renovation that's currently underway here," Brent White of White Engineering said, speaking on behalf of the applicant and owner, Huajie Zhu.

A fire gutted the longtime Wahconah Street supermarket in 2023, and the following year, Zhu purchased the property for $460,000 two years ago to build a restaurant with hibachi in the existing footprint of the more than 100-year-old building.

White explained that the project has been ongoing for over a year, and the Community Development Board granted the property a waiver to reduce the minimum required number of parking spaces so that additional spaces aren't needed.

He noted that, looking at the site plan, there is very little room to do so. A mirror will be installed near the sharp turn on Bel Air Avenue to alleviate traffic concerns.

Pruning will be done on trees in the southeast corner of the existing paved parking lot, as a number of branches are hanging over. The new owners also intend to patch, sealcoat, and re-stripe the parking lot.

A fire tore through the building less than an hour after the supermarket closed for the day three years ago. An automatic sprinkler system is required for the new use.
