Susan B. Anthony Days & Agricultural Fair Being in Adams

The annual Agricultural Fair, the only one in the county, caps a week of events for Susan B. Anthony Days.

ADAMS, Mass. – The Susan B. Anthony Days and the Agricultural Fair will begin this week.

The celebrations begin Saturday with events at the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum.

There will be a children's story and craft hour at 11 followed by the opening of a post card exhibit at the museum at noon.

There will be "Music of the Era" performed by Diane Taraz at the Adams Visitors Center at 3.

Sunday events begin early with the Pedal and Plod bike and road race at 8:30 from the town common. Registration for the 4-mile road race and 22-mile bike ride begins at 6:30.

There will be a Farmers' and Artisans' Market from 9 to 1 in the Visitors Center parking lot on Sunday. Quaker Meeting House tours at Maple Street Cemetery run from 1 to 4 and live music by the band Bits-n-Pieces starts at the Visitors Center at 4.

On Monday, the annual Park Street Fair (Hi-Jinx Night) begins at 5 and runs until 9. Park Street will be closed while attendees enjoy food, vendors and music. The rain date for the fair is July 28.

On Tuesday at 3, there will be a "Reading is Magic" presentation at the Adams Free Library by Ed the Wizard. Colleen Janz of the Anthony museum presents "Temperance: Doorway to Suffrage" at 5 at the library.

On Wednesday, the Adams Historical Society will present "The Past Life of Town Hall" at 5 at Town Hall, the former Plunkett Mansion.

The celebration concludes Thursday with a Cruz Night on Center Street from 6 to 9 and live music performed by Champagne Jam on the town common starting at 6.

The 41st Agricultural Fair also kicks off Thursday at Bowe Field with Polish Food Night and music from "The Music Man" beginning at 5. Admission is $3.



The fair proper starts Friday at 6 with a performance by knife throwers "One Sharp Marriage." This will be followed by the truck pull by Western Mass Truck Pullers and the Children's Pedal Tractor Contest.

Bits-n-Pieces will close out the night with a performance starting at 7.

Saturday events kick off with the judging of adult sheep and goats followed by the judging of youth cattle.

There will be soil testing by Western Ma. Master Gardeners from 10 to 4 and the Aggie Fair prince and princess will be crowned  at 11.

Horse pulls start at 11 and "Pups in the Air" featuring Australian Shepherds catching Frisbees starts at 11:30, followed by a harpsicord performance by Matt McConnell at noon.

There will be a sheep dog presentation at 12:30, a birds of prey demonstration at 1, followed by another knife throwing performance at 2:30. Balloon modeling, magic, and various bands run from 3 to 7.

Sunday's events begin with the judging of adult cattle and youth sheep and goats at 8. This will be followed by the ox pull at 11.

There will be a K-9 demonstration by the Adams Police Department and police dog Kumar at 11:15.

The carnage begins at 2 with the popular demolition derby and the fair ends with the award ceremony at 5.

Adult tickets are $4 on Friday and Saturday and $7 on Sunday.

Adams Free Library Pastel Painting Workshops

ADAMS, Mass. — Award-winning pastel artist Gregory Maichack will present three separate pastel painting workshops for adults and teens 16+, to be hosted by the Adams Free Library. 
 
Wednesday, April 24 The Sunflower; Wednesday, May 8 Jimson Weed; and Thursday, May 23 Calla Turned Away from 10:00 a.m. to noon.  
 
Registration is required for each event.  Library events are free and open to the public.
 
These programs are funded by a Festivals and Projects grant of the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
 
This workshop is designed for participants of all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. Attendees will create a personalized, original pastel painting based on Georgia O’Keefe’s beautiful pastel renditions of The Sunflower, Jimson Weed and Calla Turned Away. All materials will be supplied. Seating may fill quickly, so please call 413-743-8345 to register for these free classes.
 
Maichack is an award-winning portraitist and painter working primarily in pastels living in the Berkshires. He has taught as a member of the faculty of the Museum School in Springfield, as well as at Greenfield and Holyoke Community College, Westfield State, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
