Adams Girls Scouts Get Government Primer from Rep. Cariddi
ADAMS, Mass. — Rep. Gail Cariddi met with Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts on Monday to walk the girls through the process of the legislative branch.
The girls learned about the various committees Cariddi serves on. One of the committees is the Emerging Technology Committee, and the girls were interested in how these committees affect the average citizen, as well as themselves. Cariddi explained that this particular committee is working on getting ahead of the new emerging technologies so that schools can begin training earlier. This was of particular interest, as this troop is primarily a middle and high school age level.
Some of what legislators do is filing legislation; ideas are brought by constituents to their representative via a proposal and a hearing is held. Cariddi explained the process through the governor's role of signing it into law, the veto process or the revision process.
The girls learned about interest groups and their vital nature to educate the political figures on various topics.
"With all of the interest groups, we can hear and learn about both sides of an issue," Cariddi said. "Interest groups are important."
Cariddi pointed out that the purpose of serving as a representative is about serving the people she represents. The girls look forward to meeting with Cariddi on Beacon Hill in April to get a better understanding of our state government.
