NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — Gerald Desmarais has been named interim director of the Northern Berkshire United Way.

Desmarais will fill the vacancy created by Joseph McGovern, who accepted a new position as executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Harford County in Aberdeen, Md.

Desmarais recently retired from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) after a 40-year career. He served in several capacities, including director of Admissions, director of Financial Aid and most recently as treasurer.

In addition, Desmarais served NBUW for more than 15 years as a board member, VP for Allocations, and VP for Finance.

“How fortunate we are to welcome Jerry back to our Northern Berkshire United Way family,” NBUW Board President Amy Giroux said. “His wealth of organizational knowledge coupled with his professional credentials will be an incredible asset to us during this transition.”

Starting June 27, Desmarais will oversee the operational and financial management of the agency over the summer months while the NBUW board searches for a fulltime replacement for McGovern.

“It is an honor to serve the Northern Berkshire United Way Community as interim director," Desmarais said. "The agencies do an outstanding job in providing services to our families, neighbors and individuals in need. Through our contributions and support, they will continue to meet the increasing demands of our region.”

Northern Berkshire United Way is an independent local agency dedicated to enhancing well-being in the communities of Adams, North Adams, Cheshire, Williamstown, Clarksburg, Savoy and Florida.

Applications are being accepted for the permanent executive director position, which is posted on berkshirejobs.com.
