North Adams Armory Dedication Memorializes City's Fallen Son DeMarsico

A few hundred people braved Saturday's bitter cold for the dedication of a plaque and stone in his honor at the North Adams Armory Center. DeMarsico's life was cut short in 2012 during a patrol in Afghanistan. He was walking point along the road, searching for improvised explosive devices.

DeMarsico, 20, was killed five years ago by a roadside bomb while on patrol in Afghanistan. His death prompted an outpouring of grief from the community over the loss of the young sports enthusiast and Drury High graduate.

Adams Gets CDBG Funding for Visitors Center Parking Lot

Adams has received $800,000 in 2017 Community Development Block Grant funds to reconfigure the parking lot at the Adams Visitors Center. Adams was one of 58 towns and cities receiving $30.5 million in CDBG funds announced on Thursday. Also receiving grants are Becket, Buckland and North Adams.

North Adams Seeking CDBG Funds to Fix Failing Armory Facade

The city is applying for some $250,000 in federal funds to repair facade work on the Armory that was completed nearly a decade ago. The parapets of the Armory are covered with tarps jersey barriers are set up on the northeast corner in case of collapse and the stonework on the stairways is pulling apart.

Emergency Funding Proposed for Notre Dame; St. Francis' Demo to Ramp Up

The City Council next week will be asked to appropriate $50,000 in emergency funding to match a state grant to fix Notre Dame Church. Mayor Richard Alcombright sought $50,000 from Secretary of State William F. Galvin, who oversees the Massachusetts Historical Commission, to help in stabilizing the rear buttresses of the church. One buttress has partially collapsed and others show mortar weakness.
