Guyer Cosponsors Ethanol Bill

- May 11, 2006

State Representative Denis E. Guyer (D-Dalton) announced today that he has cosponsored legislation to create a commission to study the introduction of E85, an ethanol-based fuel, into the Massachusetts market. E85 fuel is 85 percent ethanol alcohol, typically from corn, and 15 percent gas, which drastically reduces the need for oil.

“As a member of the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, I’m supportive of fuels, like E85, which could not only reduce our dependence on foreign oil, but could also have an economic benefit for local farmers,” said Guyer. “I am proud to be a part of an effort that will lead the way on this vital issue."

Lead sponsor State Representative Lou Kafka (D-Stoughton) crafted this legislation after looking at E85 in California, which is currently adding pumps for E85 at gas stations because it costs considerably less per gallon than traditional gas.

“It is my hope that this bill will help Massachusetts find a partial solution to the ever increasing energy prices being paid by consumers at the pump,” said Guyer

The commission would study the viability of using a dedicated portion of the gas tax to assist independent gas station owners with their conversion and will research E85 usage by Commonwealth-owned vehicles.

While many people don’t realize it, many gas stations already use as much as 10% ethanol in the fuel they sell. Currently, E85 can be used in Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV) which are already on the road and on the market. 37 states have E85 filing stations, but there are none located in New England. More information about E85 can be found online at www.e85fuel.com/.

This legislation is scheduled to be filed early next week.
