Sprainbrook's Weekly Garden Tip - Repair Lawns & Start Fall Planting - August 21, 2006
Lawns have suffered a tremendous beating this past summer. Heavy rains earlier in the season have caused leaching of nutrients and plagued many lawns with excessive fungus problems. Record breaking heat baked lawns leaving them filled with crabgrass, weeds and chinchbugs. The cool weather we are now experiencing is good grass growing weather and we need to take advantage of this by repairing our lawns as soon as possible. Now is the best time to seed.
Grass seed needs warm temperatures to germinate and new seedlings need the cool temperatures of fall and early spring to develop into strong and mature grass. This year most lawns are lacking in nutrients and we are recommending fall fertilizing as soon as possible. Use Jonathen Green ‘Green Up” or Scott’s with “Super Turf Builder”. With temperatures below 80 degrees weed controls can be applied.
Use Bonide “Weed Beater Ultra for broad-leaved weeds. Chinchbug has been running rampant treat with Power Force if found. Expanding brown patches are usually signs of this problem. By acting promptly lawns can be put back into shape. For identification of insect and disease problems we have a handout identification sheet at the Nursery.
The cool weather in the latter part of August has moved the planting season forward. Fall is for planting and if you need help on a landscape project call in for a free consultation with one of our designers. You will want to schedule your planting as soon as possible.
